Black Box Theater at Ames Center tickets & upcoming events

Ever been to a theater that feels like stepping into a creative playground? The Black Box Theater at Ames Center is just that, an intimate, flexible space that sparks imagination and surprises. Back in 2019, they hosted the regional debut of a groundbreaking chamber opera that mixed live performance with interactive multimedia, think visual effects and soundscapes that you could actually influence. It was pretty wild. And get this, in 2014, they rolled out 'Inside Out,' a participatory show where audience members didn’t just sit back, they got involved in the story, making it feel more like a shared experience than just watching a play. The 2018 season kicked off with rave reviews for a production that used the theater’s innovative lighting and staging to really wow the crowd. Plus, the venue doesn’t just do shows; they’re into community stuff too, youth workshops, acting classes, all aimed at getting more people involved in the arts. When you arrive, just head towards the arts section behind the main lobby, and you’ll find the black box ready for whatever creative magic is on tap. It’s a place that keeps you guessing, in the best way.
